This reveiw
of "Baobab" (below) appeared in the Feb/March 2010 edition of "Jam" magazine out of Kansas City, MO.
"Strong, memorable melodies and diverse grooves abound. There seems to be a tradition of whacked-out, convention
twisting writing from drummer/composers like Max Roach, Paul Motian and Bill Stewart. Harnell’s compositions fit right
in there. It’s hard not to think of Sonny Rollin’s amazing chordless trios on this cd but especially on McGillicuddy’s
“Celebrity Cow” (possibly a reference to “Way Out West”). Otto’s sound has been captured nicely
and you can really hear the nuance and subtlety of his mannerisms. The interplay is very intimate and you can tell that these
guys not only play their asses off but are great listeners as well."
